  • Creamed horseradish is made with cream and often egg yolk. Plain grated horseradish carries neither.

Flags follow UK labelling rules and come from the ingredients as listed, not from any particular brand. Check the packet before cooking for somebody with an allergy.

Ingredients

  • Smoked mackerel80 g

One fillet, skin peeled off. It is the richest thing on the plate by a distance. As sold. Most of the fat in any dish it is in.

  • Egg2 large, about 110 g
  • Boiled potato150 g

Cooked the night before and kept in the fridge. Cooked weight.

  • Cooked beetroot100 g

Vacuum-packed, not pickled. Pickled beetroot carries vinegar and usually sulphites.

Add it to your shopping list and keep looking. The list adds the quantities up across everything you pick.

Method

  1. Boil the eggs for seven minutes, cool in cold water and peel. Halve them.

  2. Slice the beetroot and potato, quarter the radishes and arrange them on a plate with the watercress.

  3. Flake the mackerel over in large pieces, add the eggs and put the horseradish on the side. Plenty of black pepper.

Worth knowing

  • Smoked mackerel is 25 g of fat per 100 g, and one fillet is most of the 33 g here. Everything else on the plate is low in fat.
  • Assembled in ten minutes from things that were already cooked. It is the batch's answer to a cold breakfast that is not cereal.
