Allergens
- Gluten
- Milk
- Peanuts
- Oats count as a gluten cereal under UK labelling and ordinary oats are milled alongside wheat. Certified gluten-free oats are a separate ingredient here.
- Most whey powders contain soya lecithin, which counts as soya. Check the tub.
Flags follow UK labelling rules and come from the ingredients as listed, not from any particular brand. Check the packet before cooking for somebody with an allergy.
Ingredients
- Rolled oats80 g
Dry weight.
- Peanut butter4 tbsp (60 g)
The kind that is peanuts and salt. Sweetened spreads carry more carbohydrate.
- Whey protein isolate1 scoop, about 30 g
Values for an unflavoured or lightly flavoured isolate. A concentrate or a blend carries more fat and carbohydrate at the same scoop.
- Honey2 tsp, about 14 g
- Skimmed milk30 ml
Enough to bring the mix together. Whey drinks up liquid, so add it a spoon at a time.
- SaltA pinch
Method
Stir the peanut butter and honey together in a bowl until loose. If the peanut butter is stiff from the fridge, ten seconds in the microwave helps.
Add the oats, whey and salt and work them in with a spoon, then add the milk a tablespoon at a time until the mix presses together without crumbling.
Roll into six balls with damp hands and chill for half an hour. They firm up as the oats take on the moisture.
Worth knowing
- Chocolate whey gives a different ball from vanilla, and unflavoured whey gives a plain one that needs the honey. Any of the three works; the numbers are for an unflavoured isolate.
- The peanut butter carries the fat. Powdered peanut butter would change this ball a lot, but it is not in the ingredient table, so the figures here are for the real thing.
