Allergens
- Gluten
- Milk
- Oats count as a gluten cereal under UK labelling and ordinary oats are milled alongside wheat. Certified gluten-free oats are a separate ingredient here.
- Most whey powders contain soya lecithin, which counts as soya. Check the tub.
Flags follow UK labelling rules and come from the ingredients as listed, not from any particular brand. Check the packet before cooking for somebody with an allergy.
Ingredients
- Rolled oats60 g
Dry weight.
- Semi-skimmed milk250 ml
- Whey protein isolate1 scoop, about 30 g
Stirred in off the heat. Whey that boils goes grainy. Values for an unflavoured or lightly flavoured isolate. A concentrate or a blend carries more fat and carbohydrate at the same scoop.
- Blueberries100 g
- SaltA pinch
Method
Put the oats, milk and a pinch of salt in a small pan and bring to a simmer over a medium heat, stirring every so often.
Cook for four to five minutes until the oats are thick and the spoon leaves a trail across the bottom of the pan.
Take the pan off the heat and let it sit for a minute, then stir in the whey until there are no lumps. Add a splash more milk if it tightens.
Tip into a bowl and pile the blueberries on top, or stir half of them in so they bleed purple into the oats.
Worth knowing
- Whey makes porridge thicker, so it needs more milk than a plain bowl would take. The 250 ml here allows for that.
- Unflavoured or vanilla isolate both work. A chocolate one turns the whole bowl brown and it still tastes fine.
