Allergens

  • Gluten
  • Milk
  • Peanuts
  • Soya
  • Oats count as a gluten cereal under UK labelling and ordinary oats are milled alongside wheat. Certified gluten-free oats are a separate ingredient here.
  • The chocolate peanut butter isolate this was made with lists peanut flour and soya lecithin alongside the whey.

Flags follow UK labelling rules and come from the ingredients as listed, not from any particular brand. Check the packet before cooking for somebody with an allergy.

Ingredients

  • Rolled oats50 g
  • Chia seeds12 g
  • Coconut milk120 ml

The carton drink at 33 kcal per 100 ml, not tinned coconut milk. Tinned is roughly five times the calories and would change the total considerably.

  • Flax seeds1 tbsp (about 10 g)
  • Chocolate peanut butter whey isolate1 scoop (about 32 g)

This was made with ISO100. Any chocolate or peanut-flavoured isolate around 120 kcal and 25 g protein per scoop lands in the same place; a blend or a concentrate will carry more fat and carbs.

  • Blueberries30 g
  • Kiwi30 g, sliced
  • Ground cinnamon1 g
  • Zero-calorie syrupTo taste
  • WaterA splash, to loosen

Method

  1. Combine the oats, chia, flax, cinnamon and protein powder in a bowl and mix them dry first, so the protein does not clump when the liquid goes in.

  2. Pour in the coconut milk and enough water to bring it to a thick porridge consistency, then stir well.

  3. Cover and refrigerate overnight, or at least four hours, so the chia and flax hydrate fully.

  4. Before serving, loosen with a splash more water if it has set too firm, sweeten with the zero-calorie syrup, and top with the blueberries and sliced kiwi.

Worth knowing

  • The chia and flax are what make it thick, and they need the full four hours. Eaten early it is pleasant but loose; left overnight it holds a spoon upright.
  • Most of the fat is from the chia and flax rather than anything added, which is why 16 g of fat sits alongside only 500 kcal.
  • Swapping the carton coconut milk for tinned takes this well past 700 kcal. If you are weighing anything on this list, weigh that.
